Communication is The Key to Renovating
If you are thinking about renovating your home, take a moment to read this before you go any further. It doesn’t matter if it’s a small bathroom, a basement or an entire home, renovating is a big undertaking! You need the right information before you begin to make the process easier It all starts with communication. You must communicate with your spouse or whoever you live with what you want; Budget, Timeline, Ideas, Plans, Etc. I’ve seen many arguments between spouses in the initial consultation because they haven’t talked to each other about their visions or the budget for the project.
One person has a big vision (typically the Wife????) and the other has only the budget in mind (usually the Husband ????). Sometimes this is switched but in my experience it’s rare. Make sure you’ve discussed the project prior to meeting with any contractors to make sure you’re both on the same page. If you aren’t telling each contractor the same information, you will get very different quotes and they will be difficult to compare. If you are having trouble communicating your vision to a contractor in the initial consultation, it most likely won’t get better if you hire them to complete the project. Find a contractor you feel comfortable with and can easily communicate with for your renovation.
Everyone is different, so just because your neighbour had a good experience with a contractor, doesn’t mean it’s the right contractor for you. Sometimes personality types just clash. Always get multiple quotes to see who else is out there and compare them to find the right fit for you. If you meet with 3 or 4 contractors and you still don’t feel comfortable with any of them, GET MORE QUOTES! Never settle when it comes to picking a contractor or make a selection based solely on the contractor’s budget or availability to start the project.
Communication is a big key to success when it comes to renovating your home. Just like the communication between husband and wife, the lines of communication must be open between the contractor and the homeowners for a smooth renovation experience. Don’t hesitate to tell your contractor exactly what you want, because he doesn’t read minds. Sometimes the simplest things aren’t communicated, which causes issues between both parties and can sour a renovation quickly. If you aren’t sure about something, always ask. It could save you and your contractor a lot of headaches.
